Thanksgivings

eatham.jpegAbe Lincoln’s Thanksgiving Day Proclamation

It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done at the City of Washington, this Third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence of the Unites States the Eighty-eighth.

  1. Tee-hee, I got 11 right; pretty turkey ignorant, me thinks!

However, with all those “thanksgivings” and “giving thanks” in the Bible, it seems clear to me we have a choice in being thankful! I’m glad President Lincoln thought it necessary to be thankful to God even in the midst of a very sad war. He surely recognized where his source was.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! I’m fixing a 41-pound Tom turkey, pretty huge fella – gobble, gobble.

  2. Let’s see: 28 hungry adults and 11 children (and we’re kinda on the smaller size this year), maybe 41 pounds won’t be enough! I would actually LIKE some leftovers this year!

We have been Thanksgivinging for 60 years now with four generations present for about 10 years. I consider ouselves to be VERY blessed with such a loving family. It started out with three siblings getting together once they married. Personally, from a new bride/mother, I started out quite intimidated with the huge clan and have aged to a very happy gramma with my own grambabies joining the bedlam. It’s really wonderful!

  3. Turkey: much better things to be reasonable about. (I’m with Jean on the left-overs). 😉 Happy Thanksgiving, Bill, and the maxgrace.com blog community!

  4. jean, i sure hope that gold foil (or was it red?) ham is there too…oh my!! i’m bringing my squash soup, buttermilk pie and peach cake…..you’re bringing the bird? kathleen isn’t?

  5. You guys are making me hungry.
    And thankful.
    Have a great day.

Donny… I guess that means there’s a lot to be thankful for.
    Right?

    Happy Thanksgiving!
