What’s going on in your life that’s a big deal right now? I could list a few in mine: praying for my dad and his long recovery from oral surgery; taking huge next steps with our church in terms of our collective spiritual depth; getting enough firewood split to last the winter; preparing lessons for a class in biblical interpretation that starts next January (I’m teaching @ Simpson University); still working on some book proposals and looking for willing publishers (Inner Mess, Other People’s Craziness, Four Letter Words, etc)…
I have some stuff in my life that’s a big deal right now. I’m sure you do too.
“Thus says the LORD: “Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches; But let him who glories glory in this, That he understands and knows Me, That I am the LORD, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight,” says the LORD.” Jeremiah 9:23, 24, NKJV.
Let’s try it
“Thus says the LORD: “Let not the wise man make a big deal about his wisdom, Let not the mighty man make a big deal about his might, Nor let the rich man make a big deal over his riches; But if you’re going to make a big deal about anything, let it be this, That you understand and know Me, That I am the LORD, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight,” says the LORD.” Jeremiah 9:23, 24, NMaxgraceV.
And most of the time, we’re idiots.
And all of the time He pours forth:
- Lovingkindness: HESED, the gracious kindness, the unmerited favor and unearned loyalty of heaven.
- Judgment: MISHPAT, God’s infinite consistency with what is true, right, and good.
- Righteousness: TSEDAQAH, God’s perfect conformity to his own character and standards of goodness and love.
What if it made God happy to toy with people or to mess with the cosmos? I don’t want to live in a universe with that kind of God.
But Jeremiah says that these are the qualities that make God happy; in these things God delights. We get to relate to (to “understand and know”) a God like that. Now that’s a big deal.
Please continue to pray for dad (Roy) and leave a nice comment below for him so I can forward it. Thanks.
